I'm John Budden, with 60 years of diverse domestic and international investment experience. I am fortunate to have met some sound and clever investors during my career. Over the summer of 2017, I polled friends worldwide about creating a virtual investment club tailored to family offices, institutions, experienced investment professionals, and high-net-worth investors for discussion and the exchange of investment ideas and strategies. The response was overwhelmingly positive. As a result, the Dog Bone Portfolio Club (DBPC) was launched in December 2017.
In October 2009, I attended the Contrary Opinion Forum in Vergennes, Vermont, having been invited by Dean LeBaron to portray Russian Economist Nikolai Kondratieff on a panel moderated by Kate Welling and featuring Dean LeBaron, Walter Deemer and Mark Ungewitter. Subsequently, Margret Kopala asked me to contribute to her book The Dog Bone Portfolio, which provides an in-depth and fascinating analysis of Kondratieff's long-wave theory that is playing out today.
Dean LeBaron coined the term 'Dog Bone Portfolio.' He suggests that we should learn from clever neighbourhood dogs who wisely bury a precious dog bone in a secret dog bone hole somewhere in the back forty acres. Dean believes that investors should bury their precious investment bones in safe places around the world, with considerable focus on due diligence when choosing the countries, designated custodial institutions and, particularly in the case of precious metals, where the assets are stored.
We all share is an ongoing fascination with the evolution of markets and the constant need for good intelligence. The Dog Bone Portfolio Club addresses this need by providing a secure and private virtual clubhouse, where inquiring minds can meet regularly and exchange investment ideas and strategies. Trust among members is the essence of the Dog Bone Portfolio Club (DBPC).
Our virtual club has its benefits:
No travel is necessary, and there is no dress code. The only requirements are civility, natural intelligence, common sense, innate curiosity and, of course, a sense of humour. You only need a desktop computer, laptop, iPad, smartphone or old-fashioned telephone. If family offices, institutions and high-net-worth individuals qualify, they will be invited to become members of the Dog Bone Portfolio Club (DBPC).
As the Internet is our medium, security is vital:
The Dog Bone Portfolio Club (DBPC) has been using Zoom as its communications platform since its inception in 2017, and fortunately, we have never experienced any security breaches.
Dog Bone Portfolio Club Guidelines:
- Members have the option of turning their audio and/ or video output off. If they choose to remain anonymous, they can set their identity as ANON or be identified by their initials or names if they wish.
- Meetings and presentations will only be recorded with the unanimous permission of all participating members for transcription into a summary of our weekly meeting;
- Respect for the privacy of fellow club members is mandatory.
- Email addresses are considered private.
- The Dog Bone Portfolio Club (DBPC) is exclusive and private and solely the preserve of the members.
- The Dog Bone Portfolio Club (DBPC) refrains from posting any of the content from our weekly meetings on social media, because we are very wary about internet security and privacy.
Dog Bone Portfolio Club Membership will include the following:
- JB's 'News and Agenda' every weekday;
- A simple and secure ZOOM link to our virtual DBPC weekly Wednesday 11:00 am (EST) meetings;
- End-to-end CHAT instant messaging during meetings;
- Discussions with renowned investors;
- In the event of presentations by investment managers, Dog Bone Portfolio Club members contact information will not be made available.
- Opportunities for agreed upon private meetings with other DBPC members;
- A complimentary electronic copy of The Dog Bone Portfolio by Margret Kopala and John Budden.
The criteria for Dog Bone Portfolio Club membership are simple:
Only Individuals, family offices and institutions that I know and trust, or who Dog Bone Portfolio Club members sponsor will be considered for membership. Naturally, who add value with their knowledge and experience.
Individual Dog Bone Portfolio Club Membership Initiation Fee and Annual Dues:
Individual Dog Bone Portfolio Club Membership Initiation Fee: $1500.00 (CAD), which covers the development and set-up of the Dog Bone Portfolio Club. Membership can be transfered or left to a family member, and is tax deductable against investment income.
Individual Dog Bone Portfolio Club Membership Annual Dues: $750 (CAD).
